One of the biggest stories out of Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon Summit<\/a> in Maui isn\u2019t just about Qualcomm \u2014 it\u2019s how Google is finally merging Android and ChromeOS to create a new operating system for computers. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon revealed that it\u2019s finally happening<\/a>, and now, a Google exec has revealed when<\/em> it\u2019s happening, too.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201csomething we\u2019re super excited about for next year,\u201d said Google\u2019s Sameer Samat, head of Android Ecosystem, at the tail end of Qualcomm\u2019s announcement keynote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you think about the laptop form factor, we\u2019ve had ChromeOS for a long time and we\u2019re super committed to that platform and it\u2019s been really successful for us, we\u2019ve learned a lot from it as well. We also have Android tablets that have been super successful, they\u2019re becoming more productivity machines all the time. So I think the opportunity for us that we see is how do we accelerate all the AI advancement that we\u2019re doing on Android and bring that to the laptop form factor as rapidly as possible, and also have the laptop and the rest of the Android ecosystem work seamlessly together. <\/p>\n

So what we\u2019re doing is we\u2019re basically taking the ChromeOS experience and re-baselining the technology underneath it on Android. So that combination is something we\u2019re super excited about for next year, and we\u2019re working with yourselves and others on it, and we can\u2019t wait.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

(I\u2019m not sure<\/a> about that<\/a> whole \u201cAndroid tablets have been super successful\u201d part, but hey.)<\/p>\n

Neither Qualcomm nor Google have said precisely how they\u2019re working together on the combined OS, but Qualcomm doesn\u2019t just make the most popular flagship Android phone processor \u2014 here\u2019s the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5<\/a> that\u2019ll likely appear in the next Samsung Galaxy \u2014 but also PC chips now.<\/p>\n

Today, it announced the Snapdragon X2 Elite and Elite Extreme<\/a> with claims that they\u2019re the most efficient chips available for Windows PCs. That announcement came without a mention of Google or Android or Chrome, but it wouldn\u2019t be surprising if an Android for PC targeted those chips or similar.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
