The image-sharing site Imgur has shut off access to UK users after the country\u2019s data watchdog warned the platform of a fine, as reported earlier by the BBC<\/em><\/a>. In a post on Imgur\u2019s help page<\/a>, Imgur confirms that users in the UK can no longer log in, view content, or upload images starting September 30th, 2025.<\/p>\n

Now, when UK-based users try to access Imgur\u2019s website, it displays a message reading\u00a0 \u201cContent not available in your region.\u201d Imgur will also block UK users from seeing content from the platform embedded on third-party websites, like Reddit, according to Imgur\u2019s help page.<\/p>\n

Though Imgur doesn\u2019t cite a reason for the change, the UK\u2019s Information Commissioner\u2019s Office (ICO) says it recently warned<\/a> Imgur\u2019s parent company, MediaLab, of plans to impose a fine as part of an investigation<\/a> into its use of children\u2019s data and age verification measures. The UK first started the investigation into Imgur, TikTok, and Reddit\u2019s compliance with its online safety laws in March. The ICO doesn\u2019t specify what Imgur\u2019s proposed fine is for, but notes that its findings are \u201cprovisional\u201d and that it will \u201ccarefully consider any representations from MediaLab\u201d before deciding whether to impose a fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cImgur\u2019s decision to restrict access in the UK is a commercial decision taken by the company,\u201d the ICO writes. Tim Capel, the ICO\u2019s interim executive director, adds that \u201cexiting the UK does not allow an organisation to avoid responsibility for any prior infringement of data protection law\u201d and that the investigation into Imgur is still underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n
