He showed up to catch salmon at the Brooks River with a broken jaw that\u2019s healing but likely now a long-term disability.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p> Chunk captured voters\u2019 hearts this year with his perseverance<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The brown bears need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/blog\/everything-you-want-know-about-katmai-national-parks-fat-bears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pack on the pounds each fall<\/a>, gaining as much as four pounds a day. That gets them through the winter, when they might lose as much as a third of their stored body fat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">This year\u2019s contenders got extra fat and healthy thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/article\/fat-bear-week-2025-national-parks-alaska-katmai-national-preserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an enormous salmon run<\/a>. On top of having one of the biggest populations of brown bears in the world \u2014\u00a0around 2,200 \u2014 Katmai National Park <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/katm\/learn\/news\/something-big-is-coming-fat-bear-week-begins-september-23-2025.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> it\u2019s also blessed with one of the healthiest wild sockeye salmon runs left on our warming world despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/10\/8\/20903654\/fat-bear-week-alaska-heat-salmon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record-breaking high temperatures threatening previous years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Even with Fat Bear Week coming to a close \u2014 narrowly avoiding a <a
