{"id":135,"date":"2025-05-15T02:53:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T22:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.actutech.app\/valve-responds-to-steam-leak-rumors-this-was-not-a-breach-of-steam-systems\/"},"modified":"2025-05-15T02:53:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T22:53:44","slug":"valve-responds-to-steam-leak-rumors-this-was-not-a-breach-of-steam-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.actutech.app\/en\/valve-responds-to-steam-leak-rumors-this-was-not-a-breach-of-steam-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Valve responds to Steam leak rumors: \u2018this was not a breach of Steam systems\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.theverge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/STK138_Stream_Kradtke_02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/p><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">A leak of old text messages sent to Steam customers with one-time codes for logins was \u201cnot a breach of Steam systems,\u201d Valve says in <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/news\/app\/593110\/view\/533224478739530145?l=english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post published Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Valve\u2019s response follows news that a hacker is allegedly in possession of 89 million user records and put them up for sale for $5,000, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/twilio-denies-breach-following-leak-of-alleged-steam-2fa-codes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>BleepingComputer<\/em> reports<\/a>. <em>BleepingComputer<\/em> looked at 3,000 leaked files and found \u201chistoric SMS text messages with one-time passcodes for Steam, including the recipient\u2019s phone number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While one X user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MellowOnline1\/status\/1921682082025115818\" target=\"_blank\">claimed that there is<\/a> evidence tying the breach to Twilio, a Twilio spokesperson told <em>BleepingComputer<\/em> that \u201cthere is no evidence to suggest that Twilio was breached\u201d and that \u201cwe have reviewed a sampling of the data found online, and see no indication that this data was obtained from Twilio.\u201d Valve also told the X user that <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MellowOnline1\/status\/1922458687316074640\" target=\"_blank\">it does not use Twilio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cThe leak consisted of older text messages that included one-time codes that were only valid for 15-minute time frames and the phone numbers they were sent to,\u201d Valve says in its post. \u201cThe leaked data did not associate the phone numbers with a Steam account, password information, payment information or other personal data. Old text messages cannot be used to breach the security of your Steam account, and whenever a code is used to change your Steam email or password using SMS, you will receive a confirmation via email and\/or Steam secure messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Valve adds that you don\u2019t need to change your password or phone number following this leak, though it does recommend setting up the Steam Mobile Authenticator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The company says it\u2019s \u201cstill digging into the source of the
