OpenAI will soon allow \u201cerotica\u201d for ChatGPT users who verify their age on the platform. In an X post on<\/a> Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will add support for mature conversations when it launches age-gating in December.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our \u2018treat adult users like adults\u2019 principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults,\u201d Altman writes. Earlier this month, OpenAI hinted at allowing developers<\/a> to create \u201cmature\u201d ChatGPT apps after it implements the \u201cappropriate age verification and controls.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI isn\u2019t the only company dipping into erotica, as Elon Musk\u2019s xAI previously launched flirty AI companions<\/a>, which appear as 3D anime models in the Grok app<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Along with the addition of \u201cerotica\u201d, OpenAI also plans on launching a new version of ChatGPT that \u201cbehaves more like what people liked about 4o.\u201d Just one day after making GPT-5 the default model powering ChatGPT, OpenAI brought back GPT-4o<\/a> as an option after people complained the new model was less personable.<\/p>\n

Altman said OpenAI made ChatGPT \u201cpretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues,\u201d adding that the company realized this change made the chatbot \u201cless useful\/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems.\u201d OpenAI has since launched tools to \u201cbetter detect\u201d<\/a> when a user is in mental distress.\u00a0<\/p>\n

OpenAI also announced<\/a> the formation of a council on \u201cwell-being and AI\u201d to help shape OpenAI\u2019s response to \u201ccomplex or sensitive\u201d scenarios. The council is comprised of a team of eight researchers and experts who study the impact of technology and AI on mental health. But, as Ars Technica<\/em> points out<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t include any suicide prevention experts, many of whom recently called on<\/a> OpenAI to roll out additional safeguards for users with suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases,\u201d Altman writes in his post on X.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
