{"id":1699,"date":"2025-11-18T03:11:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T23:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.actutech.app\/google-is-fighting-the-defamation-battle-meta-caved-on\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T03:11:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T23:11:07","slug":"google-is-fighting-the-defamation-battle-meta-caved-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.actutech.app\/en\/google-is-fighting-the-defamation-battle-meta-caved-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Google is fighting the defamation battle Meta caved on"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.theverge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/chorus\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/25842651\/STK093_GOOGLE_B.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" \/><figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figcaption><\/p><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Google filed a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by anti-corporate diversity activist Robby Starbuck, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/804494\/anti-diversity-activist-robby-starbuck-is-suing-google-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed Google\u2019s AI falsely associated him<\/a> with sexual assault allegations and a white nationalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Starbuck\u2019s claims against Google came after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/659809\/robby-starbuck-meta-ai-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed a similar lawsuit against Meta<\/a>, whose AI he claimed falsely asserted that he\u2019d participated in the January 6th riot at the US Capitol. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/757537\/meta-robby-starbuck-conservative-activist-ai-bias-advisor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta settled that lawsuit<\/a> in August and even hired Starbuck as an advisor to help address \u201cideological and political bias\u201d in its AI chatbot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/meta-robby-starbuck-ai-lawsuit-settlement-6c6e9b0a?mod=tech_lead_pos5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported<\/a>. The outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/activist-robby-starbuck-sues-google-over-claims-of-false-ai-info-d0a8bdbe?mod=tech_lead_story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted last month<\/a> that so far, no US court had awarded damages for defamation by an AI chatbot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Starbuck is seeking $15 million in damages from Google. But the company says in its filing that his claims simply represent his \u201cmisuse of developer tools to induce hallucinations.\u201d Starbuck doesn\u2019t identify what prompts he used to generate the outputs at issue, according to Google, or any actual person who was misled by the alleged claims. Starbuck did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Google, of course, could eventually choose a similar route to Meta to resolve the claims.
