It\u2019s finally possible to purchase an audiobook from Spotify\u2019s iPhone app with just a few taps. On Monday, Spotify announced that Apple<\/a> approved an update that allows users in the US to see audiobook pricing within the app and buy individual audiobooks outside the App Store.<\/p>\n

The update also lets Spotify Premium subscribers purchase additional audiobook listening hours. This change follows last month\u2019s Epic Games vs. Apple<\/em> ruling, which upended the iPhone maker\u2019s control<\/a> over the App Store. Under the ruling, Apple can\u2019t collect fees on purchases made outside the app store, nor can it govern how developers point to external purchases.<\/p>\n

Spotify submitted the update<\/a> last week, but now it\u2019s official. The music streaming service pulled audiobook purchases<\/a> from its iOS app in 2022 after accusing Apple of \u201cchoking competition\u201d with App Store rules that made it more difficult to purchase audiobooks. Spotify also started letting iPhone users purchase<\/a> subscriptions outside the App Store earlier this month.<\/p>\n

The iOS apps for Kindle<\/a>, Patreon<\/a>, and Delta\u2019s emulator<\/a> have also taken advantage of the court ruling, but Epic Games is still fighting to bring Fortnite<\/em> back<\/a> to the App Store. \u201cThis change lowers the barriers for more users to embrace their first \u2014 or tenth \u2014 audiobook, while allowing publishers and authors to reach fans and access new audiences seamlessly,\u201d Spotify said in its announcement.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
