First reported earlier on Saturday by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/05\/31\/2025\/white-house-expected-to-pull-nasa-nominee-isaacman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Semafor<\/a><\/em>, citing anonymous sources, the move has been confirmed by White House spokesperson Liz Huston. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/31\/us\/politics\/trump-nasa-nominee-musk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> reports, based on three unnamed sources, that Trump \u201ctold associates he intended to yank Mr. Isaacman\u2019s nomination after learning that he had donated to prominent Democrats,\u201d including Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Isaacman, the billionaire founder and CEO of a payments company, Shift4, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/2\/14\/22932157\/spacex-jared-isaacman-crew-dragon-starship-deep-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purchased several spaceflights<\/a> from Musk\u2019s SpaceX. He flew on the Inspiration4 mission in 2021, and again last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/12\/24242730\/spacex-polaris-dawn-first-private-spacewalk-jared-isaacman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Polaris Dawn<\/a>, completing the first commercial spacewalk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As noted by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/trump-to-withdraw-jared-isaacmans-nomination-as-nasa-chief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space.com<\/a><\/em>, the White House also released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/fy-2026-budget-request\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-depth version of its NASA budget request<\/a> for 2026 on Friday, proposing to cut its funding by nearly one-quarter, from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion, with funding for science programs dropping by 47 percent. In a statement released Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/press-releases\/the-planetary-society-reissues-urgent-call-to-reject-disastrous-budget-proposal-for-nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Planetary Society<\/a> called the budget justification \u201can extinction-level event for the space agency\u2019s most productive, successful, and broadly supported activity: science,\u201d that \u201cwastes billions in prior taxpayer investment and slams the brakes on future exploration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Now, without Isaacman in place, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2025\/05\/trump-pulls-isaacman-nomination-for-space-source-nasa-is-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ars Technica<\/a><\/em> quotes an unnamed former senior NASA leader who said the request is \u201cjust a going-out-of-business mode.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In a statement emailed to media outlets including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/white-house-replace-trump-pick-nasa-administrator-rcna210163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC<\/a>, Huston wrote, \u201cIt\u2019s essential that the next leader of NASA is in complete alignment with President Trump\u2019s America First agenda and a replacement will be announced directly by President Trump soon.\u201d Despite being unable to confirm to the Senate whether Musk had been a part of his job interview, he had appeared set for an approval vote to replace former Florida Senator Bill Nelson.
