Last week, Elon Musk\u2019s media tour<\/a> included telling CBS Sunday Morning<\/em><\/a> he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d by the Republican domestic policy bill backed by President Trump. Now, the former White House employee is calling it a \u201cdisgusting abomination\u201d and claiming that Congress is making America bankrupt in posts on X on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elon\u2019s problem isn\u2019t the provisions we noted that would strip state legislatures of AI oversight and scale back consumer protection and climate initiatives<\/a>, while funding increased border surveillance. Instead, he claims, \u201cIt will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.\u201d The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has reported<\/a> that the bill\u2019s tax provisions would increase the deficit by $3.8 trillion over the next decade.<\/p>\n

Despite Musk continuing and threatening<\/a> that \u201cIn November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people,\u201d the White House and other Republican political leaders have not shown much regard for his statements. In a briefing Tuesday afternoon, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters<\/a>, \u201c\u2026look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn\u2019t change the president\u2019s opinion; this is one big beautiful bill, and he\u2019s sticking to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democrats had a different response, as ABC News<\/a> reports that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer held up a printout of Musk\u2019s tweets during his press conference following a policy luncheon. Schumer told reporters, \u201cTrump\u2019s buddy says the bill is bad \u2014 you can imagine how bad this bill is,\u201d while his counterpart in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, said, \u201c\u2026breaking news: Elon Musk and I agree with each other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Politico<\/em><\/a> reports that Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told reporters he spoke to Musk on Monday for about 20 minutes regarding the bill, and said, \u201cWith all due respect, my friend Elon is terribly wrong about the one big, beautiful bill.\u201d In the Senate, Republican Majority Leader John Thune told reporters, \u201cOn this particular issue, we have a difference of opinion,\u201d and that he believes Musk is using outdated data.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
