The humanoid Optimus robots are supposed to be ready for mass production this year.<\/figcaption><\/p><\/figure>\n

The head of engineering for Optimus, Tesla\u2019s humanoid robot division, left the company on Friday. Milan Kovac announced his departure on X<\/a>, insisting that it \u201cwill not change a thing\u201d about the company\u2019s plans, which, as of March, meant building thousands of robots this year alone.<\/p>\n

Kovac insisted that he was leaving Tesla only to \u201cspend more time with family abroad,\u201d adding that his \u201csupport for @elonmusk and the team is ironclad,\u201d heading off speculation that his exit might have been prompted by Musk\u2019s political activity or recent public squabble with Donald Trump. In his own tweet<\/a>, Musk thanked Kovac for his \u201coutstanding contribution to Tesla over the past decade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk has called the humanoid Optimus robots<\/a> Tesla\u2019s \u201cmost important product development,\u201d and has repeatedly leaned on the division to generate hype as EV sales slow and the company\u2019s stock price tumbles<\/a>. \u201cThe only things that matter in the long term are autonomy and Optimus,\u201d Musk told CNBC<\/a> in May, referring to the company\u2019s separate plans for self-driving cars, set to be deployed in a \u201crobotaxi\u201d service in Austin this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/em> reports<\/a> that Autopilot chief Ashok Elluswamy will take over responsibility for Optimus, which is at a critical stage. In March Musk claimed<\/a> the company could make \u201cat least one legion of robots this year and then probably 10 legions next year,\u201d which would mean around 5,000 robots by the end of this year, and 50,000 in 2026. To do so, it will have to overcome China\u2019s recent restrictions<\/a> on exports of rare earth minerals and magnets, which are essential for the robots\u2019 construction.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
