The vote was 53-45, with Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) being the only Democrat to vote in her favor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Trusty will join Republican Chair Brendan Carr and Democratic Commissioner Anna Gomez on the panel, with two seats remaining empty. Trump has yet to select other nominees for the roles. No more than three commissioners on the independent agency are allowed to be from the same party, though Gomez had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/685599\/fcc-commissioner-democrat-anna-gomez-trump-carr-first-amendment-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed doubt that Trump may nominate another Democrat<\/a> to the agency. Former Republican Commissioner Nathan Simington <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/06\/07\/gavin-wax-nathan-simington-fcc-commissioner-replacement\/?ref=broadbandbreakfast.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed his chief of staff, Gavin Wax<\/a>, a MAGA loyalist who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/12\/10\/trump-defends-dictator-comments-amid-nyc-soiree-filled-with-extremists-maga-diehards-00130968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">once said<\/a> Trump\u2019s return to office would be a \u201ctime for retribution,\u201d after announcing he\u2019d be stepping down from his post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Trusty was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/16\/24345410\/trump-picks-senate-staffer-olivia-trusty-to-join-the-federal-communications-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">longtime staffer for Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS)<\/a>, who previously served as the top Republican on the Commerce Committee, which oversees the FCC and related issues. Commerce Committee Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/services\/files\/084286BB-562A-4983-B678-D0E65A614953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a letter<\/a> to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), Monday, she opposed Trusty\u2019s confirmation largely due to concern with the Trump administration\u2019s actions. \u00a0\u201cAlthough I respect the nominee\u2019s professional background, when I spoke in support of Ms. Trusty\u2019s nomination in Committee on April 30, I explained that my support was not absolute,\u201d Cantwell wrote. \u201cSince then, the Trump Administration has pursued a series of concerning policies, leading me to oppose Ms. Trusty\u2019s nomination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Cantwell said she\u2019s concerned that Trusty\u2019s nomination was not paired with a Democratic one, which would be \u201cconsistent with longstanding practice,\u201d she wrote. She pointed to Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/632267\/democratic-ftc-commissioners-alvaro-bedoya-rebecca-kelly-slaughter-illegally-fired-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attempted firing of two Democratic commissioners at the Federal Trade Commission<\/a>, another agency created to be independent from the president and whose commissioners the Supreme Court has said cannot be fired without cause. \u201cI remain seriously concerned that this Administration will try to illegally terminate Democratic Commissioner Anna Gomez, refuse to nominate any Democratic replacements, and then operate the Commission on a strictly partisan basis,\u201d Cantwell wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese are not normal times\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Trusty\u2019s confirmation gives Carr a 2-1 Republican majority to carry out his agenda, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/628288\/fcc-chair-brendan-carr-deregulate-delete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slashing agency regulations<\/a> and pursuing action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/650664\/fcc-brendan-carr-abrego-garcia-coverage-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against media outlets he views as countering the administration<\/a>. \u201cI look forward to welcoming Olivia to the Commission as a colleague and advancing an agenda that will deliver great results for the American people,\u201d Carr <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BrendanCarrFCC\/status\/1935083089434219007\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Gomez similarly praised Trusty\u2019s experience and welcomed her to the panel. \u201cI have known Olivia for years and have been very impressed with her strong background in communications policy, which will be a great asset to this agency,\u201d Gomez <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AGomezFCC\/status\/1935087829807415450\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cIn normal times, there\u2019d be little reason to oppose the confirmation of a candidate as qualified as Trusty.
