Elon Musk\u2019s Boring Company has announced plans<\/a> to dig tunnels under Nashville, creating a loop that will connect the city\u2019s downtown with the Nashville International Airport. The Boring Company says it will begin construction \u201cimmediately\u201d following approval and expects the first 10-mile phase to be operational as early as next year, as reported earlier by TechCrunch<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2021, The Boring Company opened its first \u201cloop\u201d in Las Vegas<\/a>, where it uses a fleet of human-operated Tesla vehicles<\/a> to transport people across the city\u2019s convention center. It has since expanded the tunnel to connect the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) route with nearby resorts.<\/p>\n

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee says the<\/a> Nashville tunnels will come at \u201czero cost\u201d to taxpayers, and will instead be \u201centirely privately funded\u201d by The Boring Company and its partners. Once completed, the \u201cTesla in tunnels\u201d system will ferry people from the airport to downtown in around eight minutes. <\/p>\n

Nashville Democratic Representative Justin Jones said he was \u201cdenied entry\u201d to an event announcing The Boring Company\u2019s new project, even though other Republicans were allowed to attend, according to local news outlet WKRN<\/a>. \u201cThis project, which requires state approval, is yet another attempt by Bill Lee and his corporate donors to enrich themselves while neglecting public services and real infrastructure needs,\u201d Rep. Jones said in a statement on Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Questions remain about whether this latest loop will actually come to fruition. As pointed out by TechCrunch<\/em>, The Boring Company has floated and quietly dropped<\/a> many of its tunnel-digging plans in the past, including in Los Angeles, Washington, DC<\/a>, Chicago<\/a>, and others. At the same time, workers at The Boring Company face many safety concerns, with one employee saying they have \u201cconsistently flirted with death,\u201d according to a 2024 report by Fortune<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
