Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company is \u201copen\u201d to mergers and acquisitions as it \u201csignificantly\u201d increases its investment in AI, as reported by CNBC<\/a>. Cook\u2019s statements were made alongside the release of Apple\u2019s third-quarter earnings results<\/a>, which revealed that the iPhone maker raked in $94 billion between April and June, marking a 10 percent increase over the same period last year.<\/p>\n

The remarks come as Apple continues to be seen as behind the AI race, with its efforts on Apple Intelligence lagging relative to its peers and Meta poaching some of its top engineers<\/a>. The company is increasingly turning to AI startups for help \u2014\u00a0and reports have suggested that Apple is even open to making big acquisitions to catch up.<\/p>\n

Last month, a report from Bloomberg<\/em> said<\/a> that Apple may enlist the help of AI giants<\/a>, like OpenAI and Anthropic, to power its \u201cLLM Siri.\u201d Bloomberg <\/em>also reported<\/a> in June that Apple leaders discussed acquiring the AI search startup Perplexity. The discussions come after Apple swapped in Vision Pro<\/a> head Mike Rockwell as the leader of AI and Siri in March.<\/p>\n

When speaking about AI, Cook said the company is \u201cembedding it across our devices, across our platforms and across the company,\u201d according to CNBC. Though Apple has touted big plans for an AI-enhanced version of Siri, the timing of its release remains uncertain after the company delayed the revamp<\/a>. Apple\u2019s SVP of software, Craig Federighi, said it just wasn\u2019t \u201creliable\u201d enough<\/a> to release broadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re making good progress on a more personalized Siri,\u201d Cook said during an earnings call on Thursday. \u201cWe are also reallocating a fair number of people to focus on AI features within the company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the AI hiccups, Apple\u2019s core businesses remain strong. Apple\u2019s iPhone business grew 13 percent year over year to $44.6 billion. Mac revenue also saw a boost, reaching $8.1 billion in revenue, likely due to Apple releasing a new MacBook Air<\/a> in March. Revenue from Apple\u2019s services, which include subscriptions to things like Apple TV Plus, iCloud, and Apple Music, saw a 13 percent increase to $27.4 billion, which Apple says is an \u201call-time high.\u201d<\/p>\n

There may be other challenges coming for those businesses, though. In May, Apple said that President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs could cost the company at least $900 million<\/a> during the June quarter. There\u2019s a chance these costs could go even higher, as Trump has threatened Apple<\/a> with a tariff of \u201cat least\u201d 25 percent if the company doesn\u2019t bring production to the US. Apple has already shifted some of its production to India to decrease its reliance on China, a move Trump isn\u2019t a fan of<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apple is expected to launch its new iPhone 17 lineup sometime in September. iOS 26 should be released around the same time, delivering the \u201cLiquid Glass\u201d design language that has some users divided<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
