Amazon is splitting up its Wondery podcast studio just four years after acquiring it, as first reported by Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>. As part of the change, the studio will shed around 110 employees, while Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will leave the company.<\/p>\n

In a statement to The Verge<\/em>, Amazon spokesperson Alice Zhou confirmed that while Wondery will continue to produce podcasts, its narrative-driven studio, which has developed shows like Dr. Death<\/em>, American Scandal<\/em>, and Business Wars<\/em>, will merge with Amazon\u2019s Audible team.<\/p>\n

Its celebrity-hosted shows, such as New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce<\/em><\/a>, LeBron James\u2019 Mind the Game<\/em>, and Dax Shepard\u2019s Armchair Expert<\/em>, will join a new \u201ccreator services\u201d team that will focus on \u201cselling large sponsorships,\u201d according to Bloomberg<\/em>. Some of these shows will keep the Wondery branding, while the Wondery Plus app will also remain available after the shuffle, according to Bloomberg<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe podcast landscape has evolved significantly in the past few years, particularly with the rise of video-forward, creator-led content,\u201d Zhou said. \u201cThese changes reflect that evolution and will streamline how Wondery integrates further into Amazon.\u201d Zhou added that \u201cmany\u201d of the Wondery employees impacted by the studio\u2019s split moved to \u201cother parts of Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon closed its $300 million deal<\/a> to acquire Wondery in 2021<\/a>. Over the past few years, the podcast industry has undergone a shift to video<\/a> that has helped make YouTube<\/a> the most popular platform for podcasts. Wondery laid off a \u201csmall number\u201d<\/a> of employees earlier this year, while some of its flagship podcasts, such as SmartLess<\/em><\/a> and Morbid<\/em><\/a>, have left for SiriusXM.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
