Apple is suing the owner of the Apple Cinemas theater chain, Sand Media, over alleged trademark infringement, as reported by Reuters<\/em><\/a>. In the lawsuit<\/a>, Apple alleges that Apple Cinemas and Sand Media have made efforts to \u201ccapitalize on the highly-regarded Apple brand in connection with the aggressive nationwide expansion\u201d and that they have \u201crefused to engage with Apple\u2019s repeated efforts to resolve the matter amicably.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers should not go to an \u2018Apple Cinemas\u2019 theater thinking it is connected to the famous Apple brand, with all its goodwill and brand equity, when Apple Cinemas has no relation whatsoever to Apple,\u201d Apple says.<\/p>\n

Apple Cinemas didn\u2019t immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Apple Cinemas has operated \u201coutside a few suburbs and city outskirts in New England,\u201d Apple says. However, Apple Cinemas recently opened a theater in the San Francisco Bay Area within 50 miles of Apple\u2019s Cupertino headquarters and plans to open another soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAlready, Defendants\u2019 actions have confused customers and diluted Apple\u2019s brand,\u201d Apple says. The lawsuit includes screenshots of social media posts asking if Apple Cinemas is related to Apple. Apple also notes that \u201cmedia coverage of the theater openings on both coasts found it necessary to explain that Apple Cinemas was not affiliated with Apple Inc.\u201d and includes examples. Apple Cinemas is planning an \u201caggressive national expansion to 100 theaters,\u201d according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n
