Did Tesla remotely deactivate a Cybertruck in the middle of a highway because the owner featured it in an unauthorized music video? The story already seemed highly unlikely, and on Monday afternoon, Tesla tweeted<\/a> about the video, saying, \u201cThis is fake \u2013 that\u2019s not our screen. Tesla does NOT disable vehicles remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Instagram user @bighuey313 posted a video<\/a> of his supposed deactivated Cybertruck, complete with a flashing red warning message on the truck\u2019s main touchscreen. \u201cDog wtf my cybertruck just shut off on the freeway! \ud83d\ude21\u201d he wrote in the caption. \u201cAlmost just crashed wtf\u00a0@teslamotors<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The owner also posted an image<\/a> of what he claimed was a cease-and-desist letter from Tesla\u2019s vice president of legal affairs, Dinna Eskin. The letter cites \u201cunauthorized use of Tesla\u2019s intellectual property in musical content distributed under your name.\u201d <\/p>\n

The video quickly went viral on BlueSky, where anti-Elon Musk sentiment has helped fuel nationwide protests against Tesla. But users quickly noticed a number of discrepancies, such as the fact that the letter opens \u201cWe represent Tesla\u201d despite being signed by the company\u2019s in-house counsel. The letter also uses Eskin\u2019s old title, \u201cSr. Director and Deputy General Counsel,\u201d despite her current title of VP<\/a>. And the warning message isn\u2019t formatted like Tesla\u2019s typical in-vehicle alerts and notifications. An X user<\/a> speculated that the flashing red title was likely just a YouTube video playing on fullscreen to simulate a legitimate error. <\/p>\n

Despite these issues, the video went viral on BlueSky, X, and Reddit \u2014 and likely will continue to travel far and wide, confirming many people\u2019s prior opinions about Tesla and Elon Musk. <\/p>\n
