Nvidia, Discord, and Epic Games have teamed up for an early test of instant game demos for Discord servers, which could theoretically let you immediately try a game without buying it, downloading it, or signing up for an account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Sound familiar? That\u2019s probably because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/12\/5\/20993828\/sony-playstation-now-cloud-gaming-gaikai-onlive-google-stadia-25th-anniversary#:~:text=one%20that%20would%20let%20you%20instantly%20try%20any%20game%20before%20you%20buy%20it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instantly try-before-you-buy was the original vision for Gaikai<\/a>, one of the first cloud gaming services, and Google\u2019s Stadia cloud gaming service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/10\/1\/17924492\/google-project-stream-game-assassins-creed-odyssey-free-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/26\/22747836\/google-stadia-cloud-gaming-free-trial-30-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tried it<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/10\/23163089\/capcom-resident-evil-village-demo-browser-google-stadia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many times<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/15\/22978719\/google-stadia-cloud-gaming-free-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letting you<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/21\/22738550\/arkham-knight-google-stadia-att\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demo games<\/a> in a web browser or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/11\/23301875\/google-search-results-launch-stadia-geforce-now-xcloud-luna-cloud-gaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even in Google search<\/a>. Now, Nvidia will be showing off the idea at Gamescom this week by letting people try <em>Fortnite<\/em> from within Discord.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.theverge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/slack_8jmxBtjc9c.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"&lt;em&gt;Here\u2019s what the button currently looks like.&lt;\/em&gt; | Image: Nvidia, Discord\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Nvidia, Discord\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cYou can simply click a button that says \u2018try a game\u2019 and then connect your Epic Games account and immediately jump in and and join the action, and you\u2019ll be playing <em>Fortnite<\/em> in seconds without any downloads or installs,\u201d says Nvidia product marketing director Andrew Fear. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Here\u2019s a screenshot of what it might look like, from <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fuJFzmVmm-c?si=RPRl8aHoFiQmYLMb&amp;t=1128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an Nvidia video<\/a>, which also shows the <em>Fortnite<\/em> demo is currently limited to a 30-minute free trial:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.theverge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/08\/discord-gfn.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"&lt;em&gt;Fortnite, inside GeForce Now, inside Discord.&lt;\/em&gt; | Image: Nvidia, Discord\" data-portal-copyright=\"Image: Nvidia, Discord\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It doesn\u2019t sound <em>completely<\/em> frictionless if you still need an Epic Games account to play, and it\u2019s not clear if Nvidia, Epic and Discord will offer the demo outside of Gamescom just yet. Nvidia is calling it a \u201ctechnology announcement\u201d rather than a confirmed feature, one that\u2019ll hopefully see game publishers and developers reach out if they\u2019re interested in potentially adding it to their games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">After Sony bought Gaikai in 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/12\/5\/20993828\/sony-playstation-now-cloud-gaming-gaikai-onlive-google-stadia-25th-anniversary#:~:text=he%20presented%20a%20vision%20of%20a%20PlayStation%20Network%20like%20we%E2%80%99d%20never%20seen%20before%2C%20one%20that%20would%20let%20you%20instantly%20try%20any%20game%20before%20you%20buy%20it.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it initially suggested<\/a> it would offer instant try-before-you-buy game demos on the PlayStation 4 too, but that never happened.
