Elon Musk is suing Apple and OpenAI over claims that their deal to build ChatGPT into the iPhone is stifling competition in the AI industry. In a lawsuit filed on Monday<\/a>, the Musk-owned X Corp. and xAI also accuse Apple\u2019s Apple Store of \u201cdeprioritizing\u201d rival chatbots and \u201csuper\u201d apps, including Grok and X.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s companies claim that iPhone users \u201chave no reason\u201d to download third-party AI apps because the company \u201cforce[s]\u201d users to use ChatGPT as their default chatbot app when enabling Apple Intelligence. \u201cApple and OpenAI have locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing,\u201d the companies allege.<\/p>\n

Musk threatened Apple<\/a> with legal action earlier this month after accusing the company of rigging App Store rankings in favor of OpenAI. \u201cApple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,\u201d Musk said at the time.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit adds that though the X and Grok apps have received high rankings, neither appears in the App Store\u2019s \u201cMust-Have Apps\u201d section, where ChatGPT was allegedly the \u201conly\u201d AI chatbot in the section on August 24th, 2025.<\/p>\n

X and xAI also accuse Apple\u2019s partnership with OpenAI of creating a \u201cmoat\u201d that protects the AI giant due to \u201cApple\u2019s monopoly in smartphones.\u201d It notes that the iPhone\u2019s ChatGPT integration gives OpenAI access to \u201cpotentially billions of user prompts originating from hundreds of millions of iPhones,\u201d allegedly giving it an unfair advantage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis latest filing is consistent with Mr Musk\u2019s ongoing pattern of harassment,\u201d OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood said in an emailed statement to The Verge.<\/em> Apple told Bloomberg<\/em><\/a> earlier this month that its store is \u201cdesigned to be fair and free of bias\u201d in response to Musk\u2019s claims.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
