In <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/statement_25_2034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its announcement<\/a>, the Commission claims that Google\u2019s alleged anticompetitive practices have increased costs for advertisers and publishers, potentially raising prices for consumers as a result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The Commission has ordered Google to come up with a plan to stop its anticompetitive practices that it must submit within 60 days. \u201cIf it fails to propose a viable plan, the Commission will not hesitate to impose an appropriate remedy,\u201d the Commission states, adding that the solution may involve forcing Google to sell off parts of its ad tech business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The European Commission opened an investigation into Google\u2019s advertising technology business <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/6\/22\/22544921\/european-commission-google-antitrust-investigation-ad-tech-advertising-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in June 2021<\/a>, and later brought up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/14\/23759094\/european-commission-google-antitrust-advertising-market-antitrust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the possibility of divestiture in 2023<\/a>. The US Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/661833\/google-ad-tech-business-doj-break-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similarly asked a federal judge<\/a> to break up Google\u2019s ad tech business after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/650665\/google-loses-ad-tech-antitrust-monopoly-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determining that it violates antitrust laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In an emailed statement to <em>The Verge<\/em>, Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google\u2019s vice president and global head of regulatory affairs, called the decision about its ad tech services \u201cwrong\u201d and said that the company plans to appeal. \u201cIt imposes an unjustified fine and requires changes that will hurt thousands
