Netflix has shut down Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the mobile game Squid Game: Unleashed<\/em>, according to posts from staffers on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n

Netflix acquired Boss Fight in March 2022<\/a>, with an executive saying at the time<\/a> that the studio\u2019s \u201cextensive experience building hit games across genres will help accelerate our ability to provide Netflix members with great games wherever they want to play them.\u201d The company has frequently touted the success of Squid Game: Unleashed<\/em>, highlighting how<\/a> it was the \u201c #1 Free Action Game in 107 countries upon release\u201d and co-CEO Greg Peters pointing to Unleashed<\/em> during this week\u2019s earnings call<\/a> as an example of the types of narrative games based on its own franchises that it wants to do more of.<\/p>\n

But over three years after the acquisition and some changes to Netflix\u2019s gaming<\/a> strategy<\/a>, Boss Fight has been closed. Netflix declined to comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi everyone \u2013 well, word has gotten around quickly about Boss Fight\u2019s closure,\u201d Boss Fight co-founder and former CEO David Rippy said<\/a>. \u201cThanks, everyone who reached out today. Rough news, for sure, but I\u2019m very grateful for the time we had at Netflix.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter 10+ great years working at Boss Fight, the last few as part of Netflix, the time has come for the studio to close down,\u201d David Luehmann, a director of game development at the studio, said in a post<\/a>. \u201cI am very proud of all the people, work, and games we\u2019ve released. I wish you could see what we had cooking!\u201d<\/p>\n

The shutdown follows persistent layoffs across the industry, including cut jobs at Dune: Awakening<\/em> developer Funcom<\/a> despite that game\u2019s success and layoffs at Cloud Chamber<\/a>, the studio making the next title in the BioShock<\/em> franchise.<\/p>\n

Last year, Netflix closed its AAA game studio before it ever released a game<\/a>. Netflix\u2019s next big gaming initiative is focused around party games you can play on your TV using your phone as a controller<\/a>, and Peters said this week that the company is \u2018judiciously\u2019 expanding into interactive experiences<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
