After using the original Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> theme song in a montage of ICE raids<\/a>, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is using another popular video game franchise to promote itself on social media: Halo<\/em>. This morning, the DHS posted an image featuring Halo<\/em> characters, a Warthog vehicle from the games, and the text \u201cDESTROY THE FLOOD\u201d and a link to ICE\u2019s recruitment website. The DHS captioned the post<\/a>, \u201cfinishing this fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like with its Pok\u00e9mon<\/em>-themed post, which was captioned, \u201cGotta Catch \u2018Em All,\u201d the DHS\u2019s Halo<\/em> post implicitly compares immigrants to creatures from video games \u2014 this time, the parasitic alien species called the Flood.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The DHS\u2019s post was the culmination of a social media exchange between the Trump administration and video game retailer GameStop, based on a joke that Trump had overseen the end of the \u201cconsole wars\u201d<\/a> thanks to the announcement of the Halo: Combat Evolved<\/em> remake<\/a> for PlayStation next year. GameStop, whose CEO and chairman Ryan Cohen has been a vocal supporter of Trump,<\/a> quoted the joke with a picture of Trump shaking hands with Halo<\/em> protagonist Master Chief.<\/a> The White House followed up with an image of Trump in a suit of armor similar to Master Chief\u2019s,<\/a> and GameStop responded with its own photoshopped Master Chief Trump<\/a>, adding a meme-ified version of Vice President JD Vance\u2019s head swapped onto what looks to be the feminine anthropomorphic AI Cortana.<\/p>\n

Microsoft declined to comment about the DHS\u2019s post, and didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment about the White House\u2019s and GameStop\u2019s posts. The Pok\u00e9mon Company International, in response to Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> being associated with Trump\u2019s mass deportation campaign, previously said in a statement to The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a> that \u201cour company was not involved in the creation or distribution of this content, and permission was not granted for the use of our intellectual property.\u201d<\/p>\n
