{"id":755,"date":"2025-07-14T18:31:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T14:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.actutech.app\/texas-governor-says-his-emails-with-elon-musk-are-too-intimate-or-embarrassing-to-release\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T18:31:30","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T14:31:30","slug":"texas-governor-says-his-emails-with-elon-musk-are-too-intimate-or-embarrassing-to-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.actutech.app\/en\/texas-governor-says-his-emails-with-elon-musk-are-too-intimate-or-embarrassing-to-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas governor says his emails with Elon Musk are too \u2018intimate or embarrassing\u2019 to release"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A photo of Texas Governor Greg Abbott\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Photo by Brandon Bell\/Getty Images\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.theverge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/gettyimages-2211659363.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" \/><figcaption>\n\t\t<\/figcaption><\/p><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Texas Governor Greg Abbott is refusing to release months\u2019 worth of emails sent to Elon Musk and his companies under public records laws, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/texas-governor-greg-abbott-elon-musk-emails-foia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a joint report from <em>ProPublica<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-07-14\/texas-elon-musk-greg-abbott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/14\/texas-greg-abbott-elon-musk-emails-spacex-telsa-FOIA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Texas Tribune<\/em><\/a>. After initially agreeing to an information request, the governor\u2019s office argued that the emails are covered by a law that prevents the disclosure of \u201chighly intimate or embarrassing\u201d information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em>, which is investigating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-07-02\/texas-elon-musk-spacex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Musk\u2019s influence<\/a> over the Texas government, asked the governor\u2019s office in April to share emails with the billionaire dating back to last fall.\u00a0Though the governor\u2019s office accepted a fee of $244 to gather the records, <em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em> reports that it later refused to follow through on the request<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25975648\/2025-06-03-abbott-musk-comms-appeal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter<\/a> to the Texas Attorney General shared by <em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em>, one of Greg Abbott\u2019s public information coordinators said the emails consist \u201cof information that is intimate and embarrassing and not of legitimate concern to the public,\u201d such as \u201cfinancial decisions that do not relate to transactions between an individual and a governmental body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As noted by <em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em>, this language is \u201cfairly boilerplate,\u201d drawn from a common-law privacy exemption to public disclosure requests on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/open-government\/governmental-bodies\/open-records-memorandum-rulings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Attorney General Ken Paxton\u2019s website<\/a>. SpaceX, which is based in Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25984819-spacex-objections-to-oog-pir-202-25-redacted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similarly objected<\/a> to the disclosure of its emails, claiming they contain information that would cause the company \u201csubstantial competitive harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Musk has expanded his footprint in Texas in recent years as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/19\/us\/texas-elon-musk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he shifted further to the political right<\/a>. Tesla, X, and SpaceX are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/elon-musk\/679970\/musk-trump-beautiful-bill-spat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all headquartered<\/a> in Texas, while xAI still remains in San Francisco. In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/660773\/elon-musk-spacex-starbase-texas-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voters in South Texas approved<\/a> a plan to make Starbase, Texas, where SpaceX performs rocket launches, a town. Public records requests have helped illuminate this process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Earlier this year, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-07-02\/texas-elon-musk-spacex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Texas Newsroom<\/em> published emails<\/a> and calendar information revealing that a Texas lawmaker had planned several meetings with representatives from SpaceX. It also showed that Texas Lt. Gov.
